Countries That Accept Washington State Apostilles
We process apostilles for documents headed to over 125 countries. Whether your documents are going to China, Canada, South Korea, or anywhere else in the world, we handle the entire process through the Washington Secretary of State.
What Is the Hague Apostille Convention?
The Hague Apostille Convention (formally the "Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents") is an international treaty that simplifies document authentication between member countries. Instead of going through a lengthy embassy legalization process, a single apostille certificate issued by the Washington Secretary of State makes your documents legally valid in any member country.
Currently, over 125 countries are members of the Hague Convention. For non-member countries like India, documents must go through the traditional embassy legalization process — we can guide you through that as well.
Recently Joined Countries
Several major countries have recently joined the Hague Convention, making the apostille process significantly faster and more affordable for their citizens.
China
Joined November 2023
China joined the Hague Apostille Convention in November 2023, eliminating the need for costly consular legalization. Documents apostilled by the WA Secretary of State are now accepted directly by Chinese authorities.

Non-Hague Convention Countries
These countries are not members of the Hague Convention. Documents destined for these countries require a different authentication process called embassy legalization. We can help you navigate this process.
India
India is NOT a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Documents destined for India require embassy legalization through the Indian Consulate — a longer, more involved process. We can guide you through the entire legalization procedure.
